This activity combines joint preparation and eating with simple, inexpensive, tasty and healthy recipes.
“Cooking EfshariBari”: Experiential activity for all ages on Mediterranean nutrition that can be done together – as a family, as a class, as a department in an organization, as a grade or as a whole school – and in any other setting. The activity combines learning and experimentation with joint preparation and eating of simple, inexpensive, tasty, healthy meals and in accordance with the Ministry of Health's Mediterranean diet guidelines.
The recipes and activities at “Cooking EfshariBari” were designed so that the total duration of each recipe (including preparations and explanations) is about 45 minutes. It is possible, and even advisable, that every class, grade, or department in an organization teach others; for example, at school grade 6 will teach grade 5, which will teach grade 3, and so on.
Irit Livneh, who oversees the Ministry of Education's health sector for “Cooking EfshariBari”:
- Cost of groceries and raw materials per serving: up to 5 ILS
- Actual preparation time: up to 10 minutes per recipe (of course without the time needed to organize and explain)
- Recipes are simple, they include products and materials available at any grocery store and not only specialist stores
- Meals are suitable or the whole family – the kids too: known ingredients combined with some that children usually don’t try. Shared preparation and dining help children try new things, be exposed to different raw materials and diverse foods.
- All recipes are suitable as school activities in and many other settings (workplaces, courses and training, seminars, conferences and fun days). All recipes are kosher; if allergens are used or foods that may cause sensitivities etc. – this will be stated prominently on the recipe, and appropriate options will be given to replace these ingredients with others.
- All recipes are formulated in accordance with recommendations from the Department of Nutrition at the Ministry of Health.

Preparing for the event: equipment and safety
- Group shopping list: download the interactive tables to calculate quantities for the number of participants (each recipe has a separate file).
- Each recipe has an interactive list of ingredients for each participant: 2 disposable plates, a knife and a disposable fork (preferably recyclable).
- In the “Meal in a Jar” recipe, we use a jar and a lid for each child (an average cost of 1 ILS), you can also use large disposable cups of a similar price or ask each child to bring an old washed and dried jar and lid.
- For each class / approximate 40 participants: 6 large bowls or containers are also needed.
- For each class / group: about 4 large garbage cans, disposable tablecloths made of paper or nylon to cover the table.
- It is recommended that in the immediate vicinity there is a sink for washing hands.
- If you choose to make the “Trick Paste” recipe that requires cooking, you should also have two pots (3-4 liters) for every 40 participants, as well as a pasta strainer, 2 wooden spoons, and 2 kitchen towels.
- To boil the pasta for cooking, you must equip (for each class) 2 “Gas-Na” portable gas stoves (examples in the picture) or any other safety stove* you have at school or in the area where you are.
- Note that a suitable gas balloon will last for 40-50 minutes. That means 5-6 rounds of activity, so each hob will have enough to make a recipe for 40 participants per round.
* Gas hobs must be used in accordance with the CEO's circular (in Hebrew), manufacturer's instructions and of course, common sense. It is recommended to place gas stoves on a stable surface, adjacent to the wall and of course under the supervision of a staff member throughout the duration of the activity. It is important to heat the water for pasta preparation before starting the activity. A file with everything that is important to prepare and know about the equipment needed for activity at “Cooking EfshariBari”.
